Eight species the world let end. Black cap, red code.
Every Index Naturae cap carries its call number embroidered on the strap — a small license plate from the archive. Two things about that number tell you what you are wearing.
The letter names the archive: IN, the natural world as it is — or AN, the Arcanum, the archive of legend.
The thread names the status: white thread means present, real, still here. Red thread means gone.
Collection I is stitched entirely in red.

A typed record in the box: the facts, the year, the cause — and a sealed cipher that decodes to the name of the last one.
Once darkened the sky in flocks of billions. The last, "Martha," died alone at the Cincinnati Zoo, 1 September 1914.
The same eight records, rendered as their young — the chick, the calf, the pup that its species never got to keep raising. Same call number. Same red thread. The youth lives in the emblem, never in the code.
And it is a different hat: where the adult sits small and turned inward, the young fills the cap and faces the other way. Youth-sized for children; also sewn on an adult cap, for anyone who wants the bold one.
The adult and its young, under one call number — matched accession numbers, one box, both cards. The one that was last, and the child it never got to raise.
Matched numbers exist only in the pair.
The register opens each accession to its members first, a day before the public. No noise — one letter when a collection opens, one when it closes.
